Jewelry Boxes

Time: 2 weeks
Materials:  Purple heart, cherry
Focus: fine woodworking

A series of two jewelry boxes, one for me and one for my mother. I designed a modern take on a fine jewelry box with soft finishes for my mother and sharp finishes for me. Products of the same family with different personalities.

This project was special because it was my first time working on a small scale. I wanted the jewelry boxes to be
delicate and feminine so I used warm, purple heart and cherry wood with small, hidden hinges.

I initially worked in my sketchbook and decided to make a thinner,  longer shape instead of a traditional wider box. I wanted an overhang in the lid to act as the handle

I really wanted to use hidden pin hinges but for the lid to stop at around 100 degrees. I had the idea to embed the lid
in the sides so the back acted as a stop. I made a quick foam core model to check this and it work amazingly!

Then I moved into CAD to explore edge treatments and details like filets and chamfers

Then it was time to make!
