Furniture for Life

Time: 14 weeks
Materials: Red Oak, Walnut, Threaded Inserts and Screws
Focus: fine woodworking, joinery, design for disassembly
Furniture should be designed to last a lifetime, and adapt to owner's needs instead of staying static.

Design for disassembly (using threaded inserts) allows furniture to be shipped flat, disassembled to move or easily replace pieces as they wear out. I explored this system in a lounge chair and side table.

Table Process

An exploration of forms and interactions between table and plants. I quickly decided I wanted to focus on the shape of the table top and reference leaves. The same way that a leaf is the focal point of a plant, taking in sunlight, the top is the focal point of the table, holding objects.

The table is designed to be flat packed, made with threaded inserts and screws.

Chair Process

Exploring for my chair. I wanted to design a lounge chair with a removable seat.

3 quarter size chair models to test strength of structure.

I was using threaded inserts which made the strength of joinery vital. I focused on creating strong interactions between pieces of wood and using fasteners as stabilizers. I did this through mortice and tenons, blind dados and lap joints.
A trial of a slanted mortice and through tenon done on the Shaper Origin for the removable seat braces.
